We are the Atlanta Diabetes Charity. To contribute, please fill out a donation form, and we will pick up your supplies at a convenient location for you. All donations will then be transferred to community/refugee clinics around the Atlanta area which can then securely distribute them to diabetics in need.
While there is currently no cure for diabetes, it can be treated. However, the supplies needed for treatment are expensive and, for some people, unaffordable. While many diabetics struggle to afford supplies, others find themselves with a surplus of extras. At the Atlanta Diabetes Charity, we hope to form a bridge between both groups and make diabetic supplies accessible for all.
Celia Gilliland, Abby Newton, Riley Newton, and MC Gilliland founded the ADC after moving into the same neighborhood. The idea came to them after noticing the extensive amount of unused diabetic supplies MC had and wanting to put them to good use.
Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of diseases that affect how your body uses blood sugar (glucose). Glucose is vital to your health because it's an important source of energy for the cells that make up your muscles and tissues. It's also your brain's main source of fuel.
Type 1 Diabetes
Type one diabetes is an autoimmune disease where the body produces little to no insulin. While type one diabetes most commonly appears in children, it can develop at any age. While everybody's story is different, all type one diabetics need insulin to survive. Currently, there is no cure or way to prevent type one diabetes.
Type 2 Diabetes
Type two diabetes is also a chronic condition that can be influenced by genetics and lifestyle. Type two diabetes occurs when insulin is not used well, and the body cannot control insulin. Type two diabetes requires treatment, but not all type two diabetics need to take insulin.
Other types of diabetes include gestational diabetes and pre-diabetes. To learn more about diabetes, visit mayoclinic.org
